The Brewster Theater Company Presents
“You’ve Got A Friend: An Evening of One Acts”
Local authors showcase their original works and nine directors bring out the
humor and drama of friendship with the talents of a diverse cast.
BREWSTER, NY – Aspiring playwrights Karen Muendell of Shrub Oak and MG Wells of
Union Vale will have an opportunity to showcase their talents in early June as
part of Brewster Theater Company’s (BTC) Evening of One-Act Plays. Including 8
short plays written by local or relatively unknown playwrights, each piece
explores the complexity of friendship.
“You’ve Got A Friend: An Evening of One Acts” will have performances on Friday
June 1st at 8 pm and Saturday, June 2nd at 2 pm and 8 pm at St Andrew’s Church
Hall in Brewster.
Although BTC has a long resume of main stage productions under its belt, the
theater group is dedicated to providing opportunities for first-time directors,
writers and actors. Now in its fourth year, The Evening of One Acts has become
BTC's primary forum for promoting new talent and material. A total of 37 actors
and 9 directors will participate in the show which features original works by
Muendell and Wells. Rounding out the show is a musical number performed by
Brewster teens and choreographed by Regina Sweeney of Carmel.
“You’ve Got a Friend” also includes a collaborative piece written by Gail
Perillo of the Mahopac Library Youth Service Department with local high school
students and people with disabilities along with The Friends Network, a
Brewster-based organization for disabled children and adults. This play, brought
back to life by Somers Special Education teacher Katy Faivre, features a cast
made up of members of The Friends Network as well as students from Brewster High
School.
“This production is a perfect opportunity to synthesize the talents of so many
people of varying ages, lifestyles and backgrounds into a show with a cohesive
theme… that, although we all come with different experiences and perspectives
about it, the essence of friendship is acceptance”, says Jennifer Darby, the
show’s producer.
Other participating directors include Debbie Levin of Brewster, Antonio Soares
of Sleepy Hollow, Richard Manichello of Peekskill, Stephanie Seveloitz of
Mahopac, Michael N. Ferrara of Mount Vernon and Richie Grasso, a junior at
Brewster High School who directs a cast of other BHS students.
This event is made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State
Council on the Arts Decentralization Program. In Putnam County, the
Decentralization Program is administered by the Putnam Arts Council.
