T he Brewster Theater Company Presents Mary Chase’s “Harvey” Play’s Anti-Stress, Feel Good Themes Still Resonate After 50+ years
BREWSTER, NY – The Brewster Theater Company announces its presentation of Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Harvey ,” at the Henry H. Wells Middle School in Brewster, NY. Show dates are May 13th, 14th, 20th, and 21st. Curtain is at 8pm each night. “Harvey ” recounts the hilarious antics of the eccentric Elwood P. Dowd, and his insistence that his best friend is Harvey, a Pooka (mischievous spirit from Irish folklore) in the form of a 6-foot+ rabbit. Among its deeper messages, playwright Mary Chase explores the question of happiness and its potential sacrifice to comply with society’s notions of “normal” behavior, a theme that remains compelling even after 50 plus years. “The issues and dilemmas “Harvey” evokes through comedy continue to resonate with audiences today, particularly stressed out boomers,” said Debbie Levin, president, Brewster Theater Company. “I think we all need a happy-go-lucky, benevolent -- and quirky -- Elwood in our lives to teach us how not to sweat the small stuff.” Not coincidentally, the show coincides with the birthday of Jimmy Stewart (May 20th, 1908), legendary screen actor and star of the classic 1950’s movie adaptation of “Harvey .” Directed by Kirsten Edlund, the cast includes:
